Vermont Civilian Conservation Corps Camps
History, Memories, and Legacy with Author and Historian, Marty Podskoch
On Friday, October 9 at 7PM, the Waterbury Historical Society and the Green Mountain Club will host author and historian Marty Podskoch, who will present on his new book, Vermont Civilian Conservation Camps: History, Memories and Legacy, at the Green Mountain Club's Visitors Center in Waterbury Center.
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began on March 31, 1933, under President Roosevelt’s “New Deal” to relieve the poverty and unemployment of the Great Depression. CCC camps were set up in many VT towns, state parks, and forests. Workers built trails, roads, campsites, and dams; stocked fish; built and maintained fire tower observer’s cabins and telephone lines; fought fires; and planted millions of trees. The CCC disbanded in 1942 due to the need for men in WWII.
The book describes the history and projects of the 35 VT CCC camps in East Barre, Bethel, Brunswick, East Burke, West Burke, Colchester, Danby, Elmore, Jericho, Ludlow, Marshfield, Mendon, Middlesex, Milton/Sand Bar, Montpelier/McKee, Northfield, Peru, Plymouth, Poultney, Proctorsville/Cavendish, Ricker Mills, Rochester, Bellows Falls, Sharon, Shrewsbury, St. Albans, Stowe/Moscow, North Thetford, Underhill, Waterbury (Village), Waterbury, Wallingford/Weston, Wilmington, Wrightsville, and Windsor. It also has stories of many of the CCC boys who worked in these Vermont camps.
Marty Podskoch is a retired teacher from Delhi (Catskills, NY) and the author of eleven other books about the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Adirondacks and Connecticut; Adirondacks and Catskills history and lore; and travel guides to the Adirondacks, Catskills, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. He also writes a weekly column called “Adirondack Stories,” published in five Adirondack newspapers.
The Vermont Civilian Conservation Corps Camps: History, Memories and Legacy of the CCC, is a soft-cover, 456-page book with over 1,500 photos, 48 maps, and numerous charts. Copies of the book will be available after the presentation for purchase and signing by the author.
