Society partners with Town to create VT250th local committee

The historical society and Town of Waterbury have partnered to establish a special committee to coordinate and support local activities celebrating the semiquincentennial, or 250th, of the United States in 2026 and the Republic of Vermont in 2027. An information session for interested volunteers will be held on Thursday, September 11, at 6:00 p.m. in the Steele Community Room at the Municipal Complex.

Waterbury’s VT250 local committee will join dozens of others across the state

Governor Phil Scott’s 250th Anniversary initiative created a statewide commission by executive order in 2020. According to the executive order, the state commission’s charge is to “engage residents, visitors, educators and students, cultural institutions, historical societies, the business community and our state and local governments to participate in the recognition of the importance of our nation’s fight for freedom and how it still resonates in society today.” Waterbury is among the 72 Vermont towns that have joined the initiative by selectboard resolution.

Engagement, coordination, communication

The local committee will serve as a central engagement, coordination, and communication hub for all 250th-related activities taking place in Waterbury. It will maintain a calendar of events, promote projects, assist in fundraising, and communicate about key themes of this historic celebration. This volunteer town committee will conduct its work through December 2027, in keeping with the timeline established for the state commission.
